Re:
Rev. Carter, opened devotion with hymn #211, ‘Leaning On the Everlasting
Arms’ and the reading of Acts 12.
Devotion was closed with hymn #164, ‘I Have Decided to to Follow Jesus
and prayer.
Rev. Dr. Linda Beal opened the conference with the
call to order and welcoming the body to this week’s conference and business
session.
Dr. Serenus Churn provided the morning inspiration
sharing from Acts 13:6-12 AMP with reflection on the subject, “Great Contest at
Paphos” While considering Saul’s traveling through the island to Pathos, Dr.
Churn raises the question of who would win a particular soul reminding
us that Jesus raised the question what would a man give for exchange of His
soul? Churn reminds us that we are all souls and just as Bar-Jesus, son of
salvation, was in pursuit of this particular soul there are many who claim to
be the source of salvation in society today; considering themselves wise and
having all the answers. Churn asserts that this is why we must be serious about
the souls of men who are in jeopardy because Bar-Jesus wishes to keep men out
of the path of righteousness.
Churn says out of this contest Saul takes a trophy.
Saul tells Bar-Jesus how deceptive and unscrupulous he is and calls him “son of
the devil”. This was the day Saul’s name was changed to Paul. Churn
tells of how Saul, now Paul, could proclaim, “Every time anyone calls my name I
will remember the powerful God I serve!”
Churn reminds us to not be intimidated while aiming
to win souls for the normal looking person may be the very one with a
soul that is in jeopardy.
The January 16th conference were read and accepted with
proper corrections.
On February
19, 2007 WFU will air Darryl Hunt movie. All five colleges and universities
worked together on this.
Dr. James
Fulwood announced requested check of $150.00 for the WSSU campus ministry.
Dr. Beal
thanked all for the support and wonderful program of MLK celebration.
Dr. Churn
thanked Dr. Beal for her brilliant message and thanked those who contributed to
scholarship efforts as well as those who would give. He reported that the
outstanding breakfast was set up for 450 people yet some people had to stand
due to excessive numbers of six or seven hundred people. MLK Day was a
successful inter-racial gathering where $4,187.25 was raised.
Dr. Carlton Eversley thanked Dr. Beal for her “outstanding sermon” and reported that we should meet with WSSU and WFU to plan a whole day for the MLK Day celebration. Dr. Eversley states that there should be no competition with the black church program. He stated that WFDD should have covered our breakfast. It was proposed we negotiate that the universities hold education classes. No motion was given he will give referral to Dr. Churn.
Dr. Carlton Eversley, Political Action Chairman followed up on his report that the city’s Marketing Department has begun a marketing campaign that eliminates the use of the name of the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum. A new branding campaign uses the WS Sports and Entertainment Center instead. Dr. Eversley met with Dr. Lowe and as suspected this was not a name change but a name shift that was proposed by staff. Lowe had no real “feel” because he is not from the area. He extracted himself. The city counsel approved of this with the exception of Jocylen Johnson who voted against the shift. Eversley suggested that two weeks from today there be a private negotiation then a press conference to get the signs out and change the telephone greeting.

Membership committee announced recommendations by Rev. Sanders on behalf
of Steve Angel and Rev. Nance on behalf of Savalos Squire for these to join
conference.
The mayor is open to a greater settlement for Darryl Hunt.
Rev. Sanders
led the hymn “Pass Me Not”. Dr. AT Griffey was the Preaching Order of the Day.
Dr. Griffey is the pastor of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, Inc. and has been
preaching for thirty-seven years.
Dr.
Griffey spoke from the subject “Who is the Man/Woman of God?” (Prov. 24:16,
31:10, Ez. 22:30). The plight of the preacher is his constant encounters with
those who think they have the able ness to take his place, having to stand
alone, and ultimately being beat up in the safe house. Griffey ask the
question, “Why do we get beat up in the safe house?” Yet he informs the body
that God is looking for someone to stand in the gap. We must stand because we
are not by ourselves; even when it’s not politically correct, we must stand.
Griffey
gives three main points of ingredients the preacher must have in order to stand
as the man/woman of God. The man/woman of God must have a intimate relationship
with God, must know how to pray not giving up his/her authority, and must live
in the present doing what you can today.
Griffey’s
concludes with the sentiment, “The man/woman of God never needs to give up,
winner takes all.”
The body rose to give Dr. Griffey a rousing vote of thanks for his message whaich was encouraging, therapeutic, and uplifting to all preachers present.
